Is There Going to Be a Season 6 of Yellowstone?

It was announced earlier this year that Yellowstone’s fifth season would return for its second half in the summer of 2023, but as more and more drama has unfolded behind the scenes, the series’ survival has become increasingly uncertain. This week, Paramount confirmed Yellowstone will conclude with its fifth season, and that the Duttons’ story will continue in an untitled sequel (possibly starring Matthew McConaughey).

Here is what we currently know about the destiny of the inhabitants of Montana’s most dramatic ranch.

In February, Deadline reported that the series would conclude and be succeeded by a new spin-off series starring Matthew McConaughey. The source of the conflict, according to the publication, was a dispute with Yellowstone star Kevin Costner over the series’ filming schedule, but Costner’s attorney Marty Singer refuted the claims.

Singer told Puck News that the notion that Kevin was only willing to work one week on the second half of Season 5 of Yellowstone is a complete fabrication. It is absurd, and anyone who suggests it should not be believed for a second. He added, “As everyone who knows Kevin well is aware, he has always gone above and beyond to assure the success of the show.

At the time, a Paramount Network spokesperson told Deadline, “We have no news to report.” “Kevin Costner is an integral part of Yellowstone, and we hope this continues for a very long period. Thanks to Taylor Sheridan’s brilliant intellect, we are constantly working on franchise expansions of this incredible world he has created. Matthew McConaughey is an extraordinary talent with whom we would adore to collaborate.

The director of Paramount Media Networks, Chris McCarthy, confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter in late March that McConaughey will indeed join the Yellowstone verse. The executive added that the program will be a new spin-off regardless of whether or not Costner returns to Yellowstone.

In May, Paramount finally affirmed that Yellowstone will conclude with the premiere of the second half of season five in November 2023. However, the story will continue in a sequel without a title that premieres in December 2023.

Chris McCarthy, President & CEO of Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios, said in a statement, “Yellowstone has been the cornerstone on which we have launched an entire universe of global hits, from 1883 to Tulsa King, and I am confident our Yellowstone sequel will be another big hit, thanks to the brilliant creative mind of Taylor Sheridan and our incredible casts who bring these shows to life.”

Yellowstone is the inspiration for a number of spin-off programs for the Paramount+ streaming service. The second Yellowstone prequel, 1923, was recently renewed for a second season as part of show creator Taylor Sheridan’s ever-expanding slate of offerings. Additional episodes for the previous successful prequel 1883 were announced in the past, but there has been no word on when (or if) they might premiere.

In February 2021, it was also announced that Sheridan was developing a spin-off titled 6666, based on the historic 6666 ranches in Texas, with a 2023 premiere date. Given McConaughey’s Texas roots, it remains a possibility that this endeavor could have some connection to the McConaughey series.

In June 2022, Kelly Reilly, who plays the gorgeously ruthless Beth Dutton on the show, revealed to Vulture about season five, “People keep asking, ‘Is it the end?'” ‘The conclusion must be near!’ “This is not the end.”
